It typically involves transplanting a small mix of human, bovine, or porcine cadaver bone mineral into the jaw, with minimal to no risk of disease transmission. In some cases, the patient’s own bone may be used, harvested from other areas of the mouth or hip, depending on the grafting needs. Bone grafting is commonly required when jawbone volume has diminished (atrophied) and can no longer support dental implants or restorations, often due to gum disease, tooth loss, injury, or poor oral hygiene.

When is a Dental Bone Graft Recommended?

The procedure begins with numbing the area and making a small incision in the gums to access the jawbone. PIEZOSURGERY® may be used to safely perform the graft without affecting surrounding healthy tissue. The bone graft is carefully placed, and the incision is sealed. In some cases, dental implants can also be placed during this procedure.
