Oral Pathology

If you’ve noticed a suspicious lesion or persistent pain, contact our office to schedule a consultation. Our skilled specialists are trained in diagnosing and treating oral cancer and noncancerous issues like cysts and sores. An oral cancer screening and biopsy can be life-saving and promote long-term oral health—call today to schedule your screening.

What is Oral Pathology?

Approximately 50,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer each year, making early detection vital for a favorable outcome. Our skilled team recommends annual dental appointments, which often include life-saving oral cancer screenings. We encourage scheduling a visit if you notice any abnormal bumps, sores, or persistent red or white patches. During your visit, we’ll perform a thorough screening and teach you how to perform self-exams at home.

What are Signs and Symptoms of Oral Cancer?

Early detection and treatment of oral cancer are essential for the best possible outcome and long-term health. Tumors or lesions, both benign and malignant, can appear in the gums, mouth floor, tongue, soft/hard palate, and cheeks. Oral cancer often presents as a white or red patch, non-healing sore, cyst, or bump around the mouth, and other symptoms can include unexplained bleeding, swelling, difficulty chewing, sore throat, or a sensation of something in the throat. Risk factors include genetics, HPV, tobacco or substance abuse, and poor oral hygiene.

How is Oral Pathology Diagnosed?

Before any treatment, a thorough oral cancer screening should be performed by one of our experienced specialists or your general dentist. If needed, our team will then conduct a biopsy to determine the diagnosis and develop a custom treatment plan. During the biopsy, local anesthesia is used to remove a small tissue sample from the lesion, which is then sent to a pathology lab for analysis.

While not all lesions are cancerous, any unusual sores, bumps, or symptoms like chronic bleeding, swelling, or soreness should be evaluated promptly. During your consultation, we will carefully examine your mouth, identify any areas of concern, and create an optimal treatment plan for your needs.

What is the Treatment Process?

If your biopsy results are abnormal or anything suspicious is found during your screening, we will take digital x-rays or an MRI of the area to gain a clearer understanding of your condition. Once all tests are complete, we’ll review the results with you and discuss your treatment options. If oral cancer is confirmed, surgical excision is typically recommended, with treatment tailored to the stage and location of the cancerous cells. Noncancerous but painful lesions may also be removed surgically by our team. For confirmed oral cancer cases, we will promptly refer you to a cancer treatment center, while benign lesions will be treated by our oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

What Should I Do After an Oral Biopsy or Lesion Removal?

After your procedure, our team will review all post-operative instructions and at-home care routines with you before discharge. Following these instructions closely is essential for optimal healing and results. Follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor your progress. To maintain long-term oral health, we recommend annual dental exams and bi-annual cleanings, along with regular brushing and flossing. Additionally, we advise receiving oral cancer screenings multiple times a year for the best preventive care.

Is Oral Pathology Treatment Covered by Insurance?

Some insurance companies offer full or partial coverage for oral pathology treatment, depending on your provider and specific plan. Our Insurance Specialist Team will contact your insurer to verify benefits and determine any available coverage. Once confirmed, we’ll calculate your out-of-pocket costs and review payment options with you. To ensure access to quality care, both of our offices offer flexible payment plans and accept financing through CareCredit® and CredCompare. CredCompare’s simple application involves a soft credit pull, allowing multiple financing companies to compete to support your healthcare needs without impacting your credit score.
