What is Ridge Preservation?
When a tooth is removed, it leaves a concave depression that, if unprotected, can hinder restorative treatments like dental implants. Ridge preservation helps by placing a bone graft in the extraction site to prevent bone loss in the jaw. The graft gradually conforms to the natural gum contours, eventually healing and fusing with the jawbone to provide the necessary support for tooth replacement and other restorations.

Who is a Candidate for Ridge Preservation?
Ideal candidates for ridge preservation are individuals needing one or more teeth extracted due to severe decay or traumatic injury. To prevent bone loss and other issues like tooth shifting, it’s best to replace teeth soon after extraction. Dental implants require sufficient bone mass for proper placement and long-term stability, which is why Dr. Matthews recommends ridge preservation to maintain bone tissue and gum structure. During your visit, we will conduct a thorough examination to create a personalized treatment plan for you.
How is Ridge Preservation Performed?
Ridge preservation is performed alongside tooth extraction, where bone graft material is placed immediately after removal. To begin, the area will be fully numbed, and sedation may be used for added comfort. The tooth (or teeth) is extracted, and the graft material is promptly placed in the socket to fill the extraction site. Various graft types and tissue regeneration materials may be used to promote healing and bone fusion. Once complete, sutures are placed, and the mouth is gently rinsed with protective mouthwash.
What to Expect After Socket Preservation Surgery
After your socket preservation surgery, our team will review all post-operative instructions and at-home care protocols with you before you leave. We take pride in educating our patients on post-surgery care to ensure a smooth recovery and optimal results. You’ll likely be provided with a prescription or medicated mouthwash to prevent infection and aid healing. Swelling and discomfort are normal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication and cold compresses. At your follow-up appointment, we’ll assess your progress and determine the best timing for your dental implant surgery.
